For the last several years the American Heart Association has been working with partners to lead a coalition, Flavors Hook Oregon Kids, to restrict the sale of flavored tobacco products in Oregon. Most addiction to tobacco starts in adolescence. In fact, nine of 10 adults who smoke report that they started smoking before turning 18. Studies show that the younger someone is when they start smoking, the harder it is to quit. Flavored e-cigarettes are driving the youth e-cigarette epidemic. More than 95% of middle and high school students who use e-cigarettes report using flavored products.

The 2024 Hawaii state legislative session has started, and we are expecting legislation related to tobacco control, funding for important health issues, and addressing food insecurity to be introduced.

The Legislative Session convened on Monday, January 8^th, and we are already hard at work and moving fast. Draft legislation (known as an “RS”) is already being introduced, and we expect the session to continue at a quick pace until the end of March, with a number of controversial issues on Legislator’s agendas.

Florida's 2024 legislative session began January 9th and is scheduled to end March 8th, lasting a total of 60 days.

As the year draws to a close, it's a time for reflection, gratitude, and giving. One of the most impactful ways to make a difference is by contributing to organizations that have personally touched our lives. The American Heart Association (AHA) is one such organization that has had a profound impact on my family.
