Healthy Kids' Meals Ordinance Passes in Youngstown!

For the last several months, the American Heart Association has been working with our amazing You're the Cure advocates and the Youngstown City Council to introduce an ordinance that would ensure that water, milk and 100% juice are the default drink options in kids' meals. We're excited to announce that the measure was passed on October 6th!

Between juggling work schedules, school and activities, busy families are ordering out more than ever. Unfortunately, an 8 oz 'child-size' soda has about 6 teaspoons of sugar, and the average child in the U.S. consumes over 30 gallons of sugary drinks every year. We know that Ohio's kids are sweet enough and deserve a healthy start in life.
A very special thank you to Dr. Nicolette Powe, AHA Board and Ohio Advocacy Committee member, for her dedication to this issue, outreach to lawmakers and expert testimony before Council, along with fellow AHA Board member, Youngstown Health Director and issue champion, Erin Bishop.
And thank YOU for being a voice for a healthier future--and stay tuned as we work in communities across the state to continue to #servekidsbetter.
