Happy New Year! The Legislative session beginning May 14 promises to be an important one for NC citizens. With a number of key issues expected on the docket, You're the Cure advocates will have opportunities to help drive significant advances critical to cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
Here's a quick look at a couple of policy areas already on tap:
Healthy Food Financing - Promote the elimination of 'food deserts' in North Carolina through statewide policies and appropriations for fresh food financing and corner store initiatives that improve access to healthy foods (including fruits, vegetables, fiber-rich whole grains, and seafood). North Carolina has over 171 food deserts across 57 counties, affecting 410,000 residents.
Take action NOW to urge your lawmakers to support healthy food financing initiatives that improve access to healthy foods.
Tobacco Control - Protect NC's smoke-free law, support local efforts to extend secondhand smoke protections in other worksites, and prevent any laws that preempt stronger local laws. Also, protect funding for QuitlineNC and secure dedicated, recurring funding for comprehensive state tobacco use prevention programs that meet or exceed CDC recommendations.
We also anticipate working on health care access and working with the Justus Warren Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Task Force to support telemedicine initiatives in the state. As always, new issues could emerge that we will engage in or follow, and we'll keep you posted about those we need your voice on.
There will be a conference call closer to the start of session to discuss what's unfolding with important AHA issues. Please watch your emails for a registration invitation so you have a chance to get more a detailed scoop about these issues.
