We’ve been busy, Southeast States!

From October 16 – 18, history was made in DC: and we have our incredible You’re the Cure advocates to thank for that!

2019 You’re the Cure on the Hill, our bi-annual federal lobby day on Capitol Hill, was wildly successful if you ask any of our attendees! Gathering for 3 days to advocate for issues like surprise medical billing, funding for the National Institutes of Health, and the banning of all flavored tobacco products – accompanied by state breakouts and regional team bonding – made for a truly enjoyable experience.

We celebrated our two Southeastern States advocate award winners, Dr. Edward Jauch of the Carolinas, Science Advocate of the Year, and Peg O’Connell of North Carolina, Volunteer Advocate of the Year, for all of their incredible advocacy on issues ranging from stroke research to advocating for access to care to help build healthier lives.

We gathered to discuss our policy asks in depth, hearing from panels of experts (and you can learn more too, just click here) about policies the AHA is working on, and what they mean for Americans everywhere.

We also finished our amazing advocacy event with an Advocacy Academy, learning about fascinating topics like the AHA's advocacy across the world, and issues like preemption and what it means for local governments.

Mixed in throughout the event were moments where advocates from states across the country met, shared their stories, and forged bonds rooted in their passion to make a true difference. Advocates just like you – and we hope in 2021, you will consider joining us!

Thank you to all of those advocates who joined us in person, or supported us from home virtually and in spirit. Much like this event in Washington, we hope you will consider joining us for similar state lobby day events we will hold in the spring across the Southeast, and for in-district meetings in your community.

Live in NC, SC, GA, or Tennessee and want to join us at your state lobby day in 2020? Email Kim Chidester! Advocates in LA, MS, AL, or FL? Julie Howell can help get you connected.

A mega congratulations again to our very well-deserving award winners, Dr. Jauch and Peg O’Connell, and a large thank you to advocates who shared their story with legislators, legislative staff, and the media, who all helped to make this year's You're the Cure on the Hill a big success!

As always, YOU are OUR why!
