We're One Step Closer to Protecting Tiny Hearts

Congenital heart defects are the No. 1 killer of infants with birth defects. That’s why the American Heart Association continues to fight hard to ensure that all Florida newborns receive a pulse ox screening to detect heart defects before going home.

Fortunately, Governor Rick Scott recently advanced us one step forward in this fight by signing the state’s budget that includes funding and legislative language for the Department of Health to implement pulse ox in all birthing facilities. We will soon work with the Department of Health on creating rules and guidelines for the newborn pulse oximetry screening program.

Thank you to all You’re the Cure advocates and parent advocates of children with heart defects for helping us get this far.
