Most Austinites can agree on one thing, even during this election season: Austin traffic is horrible. Yet, when we aren’t stuck on MoPac or I-35, many residents pride themselves on our city's physical activities such as running Town Lake or hiking the Greenbelt. But in reality, we have both a traffic and a health problem.

A majority of Austin adults and children do not get the recommended amount of physical activity. This inactivity can lead to a host of health problems. In fact, one in four residents are at an increased risk for developing chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and stroke, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.

On this year’s ballot is a $720 million Smart Corridor plan, aimed at addressing both of these major issues. Proposition 1 will improve traffic congestion, while adding sidewalks and trails for safer walking and biking. By investing in our neighborhoods, we will ensure that every resident has a safe commute and access to a healthy lifestyle.

On Election Day you can help build healthier communities and healthier lives right here in Austin, by voting yes on Prop 1. Read what Bobby Jenkins has to say about the commuter and health benefits of Prop 1. Check out the piece here
