Too often, patients receive a surprise medical bill for treatment they expected to be covered by insurance. It’s a harmful practice that throws millions of Americans into financial crisis and the problem is widespread as more than half of Americans have received a surprise bill! Now more than ever, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic Congress needs to act to protect patients.

To highlight the severity of the problem and compel the United States Congress to take-action, we need to do something big…and we have! I am pleased to share that You’re the Cure advocates are joining advocates from other leading nonprofits in sharing their surprise billing stories with Congress. Last week, we kicked off an extended “uber” campaign to help protect patients from surprise medical billing. With our combined voices we will make a lot of noise on Capitol Hill, but it all starts with you!
If you or a loved one have received a surprise medical bill, we want to hear about it, and so does Congress. We’ve made it easy for you by creating an online surprise medical billing story portal. With a few clicks of your mouse you can record your story, film a short “selfie video” or simply type it out. In just a few minutes you can help make a big difference that could impact millions of Americans across the country!
I know some of you might be hesitant to record yourself, but don’t worry! These are not meant to be professionally produced recordings and bed head or a messy bun is totally ok. Also remember that nearly everyone “hates” the way they sound in recordings, but we don’t! We love hearing from our dedicated advocates and need your voice and your stories now! How you sound or how you look frankly doesn’t matter here. The only thing that matters is getting your surprise billing stories to Congress so we can make our voices heard.
Some of you may have already seen this and submitted your story, and we appreciate your help! But, if we want to make a splash on Capitol Hill and protect patients from surprise medical billing, we need to make sure to spread the message far and wide. Please share the story link on your social media networks and encourage your friends and family to participate as well!
