Stroke is the number five cause of death in the United States, killing more than 142,000 Americans per year as of 2019. And more than 795,000 Americans will have a new or recurring stroke this year. American Heart Association is always working to improve health outcomes related to stroke. Here in Utah, where stroke was the sixth leading cause of death in 2021, we helped develop legislation to create and maintain a Stroke Registry to help track hospital admissions related to stroke and implement best practices.
Nationwide, we’ve helped raise the profile of a tool on education to act “fast” in recognizing the signs of a stroke. The acronym FAST helps us remember-
- Face droopiness, numbness and weakness
- Arm numbness and weakness
- Slurred speech or trouble speaking or understanding
- Time to call 911 if these or other symptoms occur
These, along with other tools, help everyday people recognize the warning signs of a stroke, help care providers give the absolute best care for stroke patients and survivors, and help us all live in a world where we can all work together to eradicate stroke.
May is also when the American Heart Association in Utah hosts our CycleNation event! CycleNation is a movement empowering people to be healthy while funding vital research to eradicate stroke and heart disease. To support the Utah American Heart Association and have fun while doing it, join CycleNation on Friday, May 19, 2023 at Torrent Cycle Downtown, 252 E 300 S, SLC, UT.
