A quick update on Arizona legislative session

The Arizona Legislature has reached the 200th day mark in the current legislative session and there is no end in sight.

The House and Senate are in recess at the moment but are expected to return on July 31 to discuss the plan moving forward for the rest of the session. When the legislature reconvenes, we will continue to monitor legislation and continue to work to fight against preemption.

Looking toward local work, our efforts to pass a comprehensive tobacco retail license (TRL) in the city of Tempe continue. At a work-study session in early June, we made the case for including annual compliance checks and urged the city to commit to ending the sale of all flavored tobacco products. We are optimistic that action will take place in August. The city of Flagstaff met on July 3 to learn about their existing TRL ordinance that passed in 2019. The American Heart Association and other partners submitted comments to the City Council urging them to enforce the ordinance that was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
