On April 28th, 2022, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced two proposed rules that would prohibit the sale of menthol cigarettes as well as all flavored cigars! If finalized, BIG Tobacco would no longer be able to market and sell these dangerous, easy to use products that have been targeting and hooking communities of color and youth for generations.

These products have been shown to increase the number of youth and adults who become regular smokers and boost tobacco use and nicotine addiction putting users on a path to serious illness and death. The science is clear, menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars have a negative effect on public health, especially in underserved communities and should not be allowed to remain on the market.
Since the FDA’s announcement, You're The Cure (YTC) advocates have been making their voices heard loud and clear. We’ve submitted thousands of comments to the FDA in support of these proposed rules, encouraging the FDA to act quickly to finalize the rules and remove these highly addictive and dangerous products from the market.
Additionally, on June 13th and 15th, YTC advocates participated in virtual “listening sessions” hosted by the FDA. These listening sessions were an opportunity for the American public to share their comments directly to FDA decision makers. Out of thousands of applicants, three YTC advocates were selected to participate, and they did an amazing job! They each used their 5 minutes to highlight the importance of these proposed rules and urge the FDA to act quickly and finalize the rules. Over the course of many hours of comments, one thing was clear. BIG Tobacco will do all they can to undermine and prevent these rules from taking effect. Please don’t delay, the FDA plans to close the comment portal on July 5th and it is critically important that we counter the efforts of BIG Tobacco to weaken and prevent these rules from taking effect.
