A federal court found that the tobacco industry engaged in fraud, conspiracy, and racketeering. And it ordered them to run television and newspaper ads telling the truth about their deadly products - after decades of lies to the American people.
This victory is the result of a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Department of Justice. The industry fought us in court for 18 years. They ended their appeals this year. Now, the ads will finally run in about 50 newspapers and for a year on the major television networks. These ads don't make up for the 480,000 people tobacco kills in the U.S. every year - or the industry's continued efforts to lure young people and stop tobacco control policies. But we need to make sure as many people see them and learn the truth as possible.
