The American Heart Association supports increasing the minimum legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21.The tobacco industry aggressively markets to youth and young adults to recruit replacement smokers and guarantee profits. With almost 95 percent of addicted adult smokers starting before age 21, preventing youth from starting is essential to reducing smoking prevalence. Raising the purchase age to 21 will reduce teens’ ability to buy tobacco products themselves or to access them through social sources.

Take a look at the 5 cities in Minnesota that have passed Tobacco 21 as of today:

Edina - St. Louis Park - Bloomington - Plymouth - North Mankato

Do you want to see your city added to that list? Sign our Tobacco 21 Petition and we'll deliver it to your lawmakers for you!

Coming up next month, there are five cities that are going to be holding public hearings and votes. If you live in these cities and would like to become more involved, either by attending or testifying at the hearing, or writing a letter to your council members, email Jess Nolan and we will get your more information.
