The HEARTS Act is a bill with strong bipartisan support that will authorize federal funding to help school districts:

  • Provide CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) training for students, staff and sports coaches.
  • Purchase AEDs and related equipment;
  • Develop cardiac emergency response plans, which can help reduce death from cardiac arrest in school settings.

Up to 23,000 young people suffer a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital each year in this country; only 10% survive this traumatic event. In schools with AEDs, 70% of children survive a cardiac arrest. That is seven times higher than the overall survival rate for children.

Tens of thousands of You’re the Cure advocates have contacted their elected officials to ask them to support this bill. Advocates like you have sent emails, made phone calls, and visited their elected officials in person to ask for these policies to become law. The work of these advocates have made this possible! This is a huge step towards reducing the number of deaths due to cardiac arrest in schools. Our work isn’t done, our focus moves to the Senate. You can click this link to ask your Senators to join the House and make these life-saving policies law.
