The Heart of our 2017 Agenda

Ensuring Meaningful and Affordable Access to Care

  • From 2007 – 2009, one in seven applicants was denied coverage based on a health condition
  • More than three million young adults who would have otherwise been uninsured have been able to gain insurance coverage by staying on their parents’ plans

Access to rehabilitation for heart and stroke patients

  • Few than twenty-percent of eligible patients participate in cardiac rehab, which has been shown to reduce the risk of an additional cardiac event.

Research saves lives

  • Over the past ten years, National Institutes of Health has helped deaths from cardiovascular disease fall by thirty-percent. Despite these gains, only four-percent of the NIH budget goes toward heart research, and only one-percent to stroke.
