This week, the Senate passed and the President signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), a bill that replaces No Child Left Behind and represents a huge win for physical education in schools.
With overwhelming support from both parties, the ECAA officially establishes physical education as part of a well-rounded curriculum, and allows schools to apply for more funding than they could in the past. The bill also improves how physical education grants are distributed, and will lead to more schools getting more money, particularly the low-income schools that need it most.
None of this would be possible without the actions taken by the You're the Cure community. Together, you sent more than 27,000 messages to lawmakers urging them to keep physical education strong and get our kids moving. Without your advocacy, this victory would not have been possible. Thank you for your support, and for helping students get the healthy futures they deserve.
