Session Update: Week 9
We are exactly two months in to the 2018 legislative session! Given the desire to adjourn by early April, all committees other than the Senate and House Finance committees are printing final calendars. We expect the Finance committees to begin discussions on the state appropriations bill in two weeks.

Session Update: Week 7
Tennessee state offices were closed on Monday, Feb. 19th in recognition of President’s Day, so there were fewer days to get a lot of work done on American Heart Association priorities! Committee and floor (full chamber) calendars were very full during this short week. A great group of AHA volunteers, networkers and staff assembled at the Tennessee legislature on Wednesday, Feb. 21st to participate in AHA’s “Heart” Day on the Hill. Attendees had opportunities to meet with legislators about our 2018 public policy initiatives (detailed below) including Lt. Gov. Randy McNally and House Speaker Beth Harwell. We appreciate all who were able to spend time at the capitol this week!
Our systems of care bills (STEMI and Stroke) both were successful in next step of passage, and updates are added on each bill below. House and Senate leadership continue to push for early April adjournment, so committees are scheduling final calendars to work on over the next few weeks to complete business.

Session Update: Week 4
Legislators returned for business as usual this week. Bill filing deadline was Thursday Feb. 1st, so we expect to see committee calendars much busier than they have been. Heart month is officially underway, and we were honored that the state proclaimed Friday, February 2nd as National Wear Red Day to raise awareness that heart disease is the #1 killer of women. Both the Senate and House formally recognized the Go Red For Women campaign during their floor sessions on Thursday morning.

Tennessee Session Update: Week 3
Legislators returned for business as usual this week. Committees calendars are still light early in session, but Senate and House leadership are encouraging members to start moving bills. Governor Haslam will give his 8th and final State of the State address in a joint session of the legislature on Monday, January 29th at 6:00 p.m. CST. During his address, which will be televised, the governor will reveal his full 2018 legislative package and proposed state budget for 2018-19. Included in this package is an aggressive plan named “TN Together” focusing on prevention, treatment and law enforcement aimed at ending the opioid epidemic in Tennessee.

Session Update: Week 1
The Tennessee General Assembly reconvened on Tuesday, January 9th in Nashville. Given the political campaign landscape in Tennessee and the flurry of activity with legislative members retiring or seeking other office, we anticipate adjournment in early April this year.

Happy Holidays!
When we return from the holidays, Tennessee will be days away from the 2018 legislative session. The legislature will convene on Tuesday, January 9 and likely adjourn in mid-April.
