Affordable Care Act and Threats to Coverage
On March 23rd 2010, President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act into law. This bill, often shortened to the Affordable Care Act or ACA represented a significant overhaul of the U.S. healthcare system and the largest expansion of medical coverage to uninsured individuals in nearly 50 years. The American Heart Association continues to support the ACA because of its significant positive impact on the CVD population.

Short Term Limited Duration Health Plans: Not Worth the Risk
Finding and enrolling in quality health insurance in 2019 will be more difficult due to a rule recently issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This rule, allows substandard insurance plans, known as “short-term, limited-duration” or “short-term plans” to be sold alongside plans that cover comprehensive medical benefits as required by the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

1332 Waivers and Potential Implications
When Congress passed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010 they included a provision, known as section 1332, that would permit states to waive certain requirements of the ACA in order to extend coverage to more individuals. If approved, these waivers, also called “innovation waivers”, would allow states to offer alternative health care plans so long as the alternative plan retained the basic patient protections under the ACA.
