Maryland advocates come together for Lobby Day 2023!
Earlier this month, advocates from across the state came together to advocate for heart health and the issues they care most about.
A group of You’re the Cure advocates, coalition partners, and more joined the Association’s advocacy team in Annapolis for a Lobby Day – our first in person in 3 years. We all learned more about Healthy School Meals for all and the importance of advocacy, then we spread across the Capitol to meet with legislators and tell them why we need to make healthy school meals for all a reality in Maryland.

All families should have access to healthier food choices!
Now that kids are returning to school, it’s a good time to think about how we can support their healthier eating habits while making sure the choices available are not only good for them, but what they’ll actually eat!
Access to healthier foods can be difficult for many families and children in rural communities and cities who don’t live close to any store with fresh produce and if they do, then the quality might also make it a barrier. This is why we are working to support programs that help children and families access healthier foods. Programs like produce RX, where doctors prescribe healthier foods for families, and they can receive them free at participating stores. Or supporting the expansion of food assistance for families that need it most. During our worst moments the past couple of years, we learned how many people are really facing food insecurity. If we can help make it easier to access healthy foods, then we can give children and families a better opportunity for longer, healthier lives.

Complete Streets help us all be more active!
Are you looking for more ways to be active and getting around your community? The good news is that all residents have the right to ask their local governments to pass the Complete Streets policy. When communities pass Complete Streets, streets will include bike lanes, sidewalks, crosswalks, and curb ramps. These roadway features increase accessibility to schools, parks, and playgrounds for all residents, improving everyone’s health by making it easier and safer to be active.

Now that we’re getting out and about a little bit more, we’re all out in the sun and the heat more. These hot summer months, it’s important to remember to stay hydrated. It’s common that we forget how important water is to us- but anyone who has felt that satisfaction of a sip of water when you’re feeling dehydrated knows it can make a big difference to how you feel.

Move more and stay active while staying safe!
As the weather improves, we understand the challenges of remaining physically active while following social distancing guidelines. It’s hard enough to find time when you aren’t looking after schoolwork with your kids and thinking about how to keep yourself or your family safe.
