In June of 2003, my third child, Joshua, was born via c-section. Diagnosed with a Critical Congenital Birth Defect (CCHD) before birth, he was immediately whisked away to the hospital next door for his first of three open heart surgeries, without me even getting a glimpse of him.
Watching my mother and my older sister suffer with heart disease encouraged me as a second grader to become a cardiologist. But after losing both of them in a span of just 10 days as an 11 year-old, my focus changed.

Survivor Spotlight: Sheila Long
Meet Sheila Long, Survivor and Advocate for Women's Heart Health. As a healthy, active and vibrant woman in her 40’s, Sheila never expected to experience a heart attack. Sheila did not have the common risk factors for heart attack – she was a non-smoker, she exercised on a regular basis and maintained a healthy diet and weight. However, Sheila did have heart disease in her family.
