Meet Amber Beer
Amber Beer recently attended our National Lobby Day in Washington DC! One of the primary issues we talked with our elected about was additional funding for NIH research, specifically for cardiovascular and stroke health. Amber shared with us that the importance of continued research on heart health drives her to be involved with the AHA.

Advocate Spotlight: Brenda and Gary Price

Advocate Spotlight: Nicole Neugebauer
We are proud to recognize Nicole Neugebauer in our Advocate Spotlight! Nicole was instrumental in helping South Dakota ensure all our students learn the life-saving skill of hands-only CPR before graduating from high school. Recently, the South Dakota Hall of Fame selected Nicole as as example of an Act of Excellence in their publication, A Mission to Save Lives, submitted by Mr. Terry Woster. Woster submitted the recommendation for inclusion in the SD Hall of Fame's Archive of the History of the Culture of Excellence in South Dakota.

Advocate Spotlight: Ann Thompson
You’re the Cure Advocate Ann Thompson knows the heartbreak of losing a child. Her son, Adam, had a sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 16. Ann shares her tragic experience to encourage others to learn CPR. Earlier this month, Ann testified before the SD legislature to encourage CPR as a high school graduation requirement.

Advocate Spotlight: Rob Swenson
For more than 20 years, I quietly observed the anniversary of the minute that I quit smoking for good. Every June 1 at 2:30 p.m., I would take a mental break to congratulate myself for going another year without a cigarette and renew my personal commitment to nonsmoking. In recent years, however, the anniversary minute has been slipping by unnoticed with increasing frequency. I’ve been a couple of hours or even a day late in realizing that the minute had passed, and that’s fine. I consider it proof that tobacco doesn’t control my life, like it did years ago. On June 1, 2017, I’ll have gone 30 straight years without smoking. I’m proud of that.

Advocate Spotlight: Rae O'Leary
Rae O'Leary is a advocate for public health and led the Canli Coalition to pass a tribal ordinance to protect the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe from the dangers of secondhand smoke by making all enclosed places smoke-free. Rae also joined our state-wide advocacy committee to share her knowledge, expertise and experiences to benefit all communities in South Dakota. We are pleased to introduce you to Rae O'Leary.

Survivor Spotlight: Owen Harris
Meet Owen Harris. Shortly after little Owen was born, their doctor told his family he had a very loud heart murmur and that they needed to do an EKG right away. The doctor also said she would be consulting with a pediatric cardiologist from Sioux Falls. A few days later, Owen’s parents met with the pediatric cardiologist and found out that Owen had bicuspid aortic stenosis.

Advocate Spotlight: David Bordewyk
As general manager and chief lobbyist for South Dakota Newspaper Association, I spend a portion of every winter at the state capitol in Pierre, advocating for newspapers, the First Amendment and open government issues before legislators and others. Lobbying during the legislature involves “down time” -- waiting around the capitol to talk to legislators, sitting through lengthy committee hearings and more. It was during one of those down times a few years ago I took advantage of a mobile heart screening clinic being conducted at the state capitol. That heart screening changed my life, if not saved my life.
