Meet Lisa Miles
For Lisa Miles, it was a feeling of butterflies in her chest that she only noticed when she laid down at night, but that flutter could have claimed her life. "I didn't realize how much fat had accumulated around my heart and my organs, and that was a huge eye opener for me. It's what I needed to get pushed to do this," Miles, a mother and dental instructor at Ozarks Technical Community College, said.
'This' was a three-month health overhaul with the American Heart Association in Springfield. Miles was one of ten women selected to receive expert help to shape a healthier future through the 'Go Red for Women BetterU Makeover Challenge.'
"I've lost over 30 pounds. My triglycerides have lowered by 73. My cholesterol went down by 50 points, and my body fat went down by 16 percent," Miles said.
Most importantly, Miles said her now-healthy heart has stopped fluttering at night. "I don't wake up tired. I don't go to bed tired. I wake up, and now I've got a plan for what I'm going to eat for breakfast, what I'm going to eat for lunch, kind of a semi-plan of what I'm going to eat for dinner, but what I' m not going to eat for dinner," she said. "I'm not going to go back to where I was before," Miles said.
