My 15 year old daughter was a perfectly healthy, typical child who survived a stroke nine years ago caused from chicken pox. This is pretty rare and does not happen often in children. Maggie couldn't walk or even hold her head up on her own right after the stroke. After spending an initial six weeks in the hospital and continuing with OT and PT over the years, she has thankfully been able to regain function but still struggles, especially with her left hand. I am my daughter's biggest advocate and participating in the AHA's advocacy network is an important component of this. Strokes happen not only to adults but children as well so funding for childhood stroke research is very important!
