Ryan Boutin, New Hampshire

On the 7th of July 2008, at seven years old, Ryan awoke with abdominal pain.

We took him to the Pediatrician’s office that afternoon, and he had an emergency appendectomy at 5pm.  While in recovery, the Anesthesiologist informed us that he had noticed an irregular heartbeat.  Our Pediatrician ordered additional tests after his discharge.  Originally, we were told he had a murmur and Right Bundle Branch Block.  We were referred to the Pediatric Cardiology Department at CHAD (Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock) in Manchester.  We will never forget that day; it was on 24 July 2008 (the day a tornado touched down in Deerfield, NH).  That day, Ryan was diagnosed with an Atrial Septal Defect and a cleft Mitral Valve.Thankfully, we live an hour away from one of the best hospitals!  Ryan underwent successful open heart surgery on 17 September 2008 at Children’s Hospital in Boston (just after his eighth birthday).  He was actually up and playing air hockey with his Dad two days after his surgery in the Cardiac children’s room!

Today, he is a healthy, happy and active 12 year old and just started the seventh grade. He loves playing baseball and basketball!

We are so grateful to all of the staff at Coastal Pediatrics, Portsmouth Regional Hospital, CHAD, as well as Children’s Hospital for their wonderful care.

We are pleased to donate to the AHA, and support their mission to build healthier lives, free of heart diseases!  Thank you for giving us this opportunity to share his story!

Kind regards,

The Boutin Family
