Rhode Island advocates recently joined us at the State House to talk with their senators and representatives about our Tobacco 21 and healthy school marketing bills.
Our Tobacco 21 Lobby Day was held on April 26th and focused on our bill that would increase the minimum legal sale age for tobacco products from 18 to 21. We were excited to have advocates from the American Lung Association join us for the event. This bill is very important because 95 percent of adult smokers begin smoking before they turn 21. In addition, 90% of those who provide cigarettes to younger kids fall in the 18-21 age range. This bill will reduce tobacco use among young people, save lives and help make the next generation tobacco-free!
Our Healthy School Marketing Lobby Day was held on May 17th and focused on our bill that would ensure only healthy foods and beverages are advertised and marketed to children on school property. This was great timing because the Rhode Island House had just passed our bill the evening before the event, so we had a chance to say thank you to the representatives who voted in favor! We are hoping the Senate will act on the bill very soon.
This concludes our Lobby Day events for the 2017 Legislative Session, but we encourage all advocates to consider participating in 2018! If you would like additional information, please contact Megan Tucker, Senior Director – Government Relations, at (401) 228-2331 or [email protected].
