This past session we made more progress than ever before in advancing a sugar sweeteneed beverage tax in Vermont. One of those we have to thank for getting hearings on this important issue is Rep. Dave Sharpe of Bristol. Sharpe, who serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, championed the tax as a way to lower health care spending. Said Sharpe at a Montpelier press conference, " We have a large and growing obesity problem in Vermont and in our nation that is contributing to the high cost of health care. We need to start to address this problem and taxing beverages that have sugar added is a first step which deals with one of the significant contributors to obesity." Help us continue the fight to reduce consumptionn of sugary drinks.
