Patients must be top priority after election, says AHA CEO

Washington, D.C., Nov. 7, 2012 — American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown issued the following statement today on President Obama’s re-election to a second term:

“Yesterday’s election ended a long and arduous political campaign for our nation. The American Heart Association hopes that the voters’ decision will mark the beginning of a renewed spirit of cooperation on Capitol Hill, given the serious challenges we face when it comes to the health of all Americans.

New beginnings often give us the opportunity to take stock of what is important. The association remains committed to our important mission to help Americans build healthier lives, free of heart diseases and stroke, by working to achieve a healthcare system that is efficient, effective and equitable for every patient.  Under the Affordable Care Act, reforms supported by the association that will help attain this goal include providing access to the care patients need to recover after a heart attack or stroke, and emphasizing prevention strategies that will lessen the immense burden of these diseases. In addition, the association is working hard to protect essential research funding supported by the NIH from mandatory federal budget cuts slated to go into effect in January.

While all of these efforts are critical to the success of our organization’s 2020 goal to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans, and prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes through the Million Hearts initiative, we must tackle tremendous challenges as a nation, including better nutrition, physical inactivity, smoking and obesity.

With this election now behind us, the American Heart Association hopes our political leaders will remember the one key principle that should guide our work ahead – patients and their need for affordable quality health care must be our No. 1 priority.”
