We have an important update on one of our legislative priorities. As we shared before, in the final days of the 2018 legislative session language was attached to a bill that took away the counties’ power to make laws concerning tobacco and vaping sales. This legislative session a bill that would undo that preemption and return decision making power to the counties on this important health issue is moving through the legislature. We are happy to share that it has passed out of both Senate committees it was assigned to with only one amendment (which actually makes it stronger) and will be voted on by the entire Senate soon. If it passes there it will then head to the House for consideration and a vote.
Prior to losing home rule authority counties had begun plans to enact local ordinances designed to address the youth vaping problem. After years of inaction on the youth vaping epidemic at the statewide level the counties have indicated they’d like home rule authority returned to them so they can begin to address the problem in their own communities. This legislation (SB1447, SD1) is part of the county governments’ package of priority bills this year which restores their ability to address the growing youth vaping epidemic.
While we aren’t celebrating yet we are thrilled to share that the bill has made it this far. We hope we can count on your support to continue moving this bill forward as session progresses.
