Focus on Cardiac Emergency Response Plans in Oklahoma

During the 2024 Oklahoma Legislative session, we will be focusing on Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERP), which create a system to help get care quickly for someone in cardiac arrest.

Here are some quick facts about a CERP:

  • It can increase survival rates from cardiac arrest by 50% or more.
  • Heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. CERPs help protect staff and fans as well.
  • It is estimated that more than 23,000 children under the age of 18 experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital each year in the United States. Almost 40% of these events are sports-related.
  • With about 49.5 million students enrolled in U.S. public schools in pre-K to 12, about 3 million teachers in the public school system, plus numerous staff, it is important for school facilities to have a plan in place to address cardiac arrest.
