Congress is scheduled to return to Washington D.C. in the second week of November. Before they went on recess at the end of September the work of the American Heart Association and You’re the Cure advocates like you led to a major step in our campaign to build a Nation of Lifesavers. The House of Representatives unanimously passed the HEARTS Act. The HEARTS Act is a bill that would improve the chain of survival when someone suffers a cardiac arrest in school.

As many as 23,000 children suffer a cardiac arrest each year in this country, unfortunately only 10% of people who suffer a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital will survive. When someone quickly starts CPR and uses a nearby automated external defibrillator (AED), it doubles or triples the likelihood of surviving. In schools with a charged AED, and staff trained to use it the likelihood of a child surviving a cardiac arrest goes up to 70%. The HEARTS Act would establish a federal grant program to help schools train staff and volunteers on CPR, purchase and maintain AEDs, and establish cardiac emergency response plans.
The House of Representatives passing this bill unanimously is a major step in making these lifesaving policies law. We need the United States Senate to pass a similar bill before the end of the year. You’re the Cure advocates have been working on this legislation for a long time, since March of 2023, hundreds of advocates have met with their lawmakers, thousands of advocates have made phone calls, and tens of thousands of emails have been sent asking federal lawmakers to pass these lifesaving policies.
We can’t stop now, not when we are so close to passing these important policies. You can keep our momentum going by clicking this link and letting your Senators know they need to act now!
