North Dakota Falls Further Behind on Tobacco Tax

The Minnesota House and Senate passed a $1.60 increase in the price per pack of cigarettes. With this move by our neighboring state, there is now a $3 per pack gap between the tobacco tax in Minnesota and North Dakota.

This decision by Minnesota lawmakers will save lives and save the state health care costs. It will save Minnesota kids from ever starting a life-threatening tobacco addiction and it will motivate more Minnesotans to quit smoking.  Increasing the tobacco tax in a state is one of the most effective steps to reduce the harmful effects of tobacco.

North Dakota will do an interim study next year on raising the tobacco tax in our state.  As you see your lawmakers during the off-session, encourage them to support an increase in the tobacco tax in North Dakota.
