No Child in Montana Should Go Hungry

Legislation (HB 863) designed to help ensure no Montana public school child goes hungry was heard Monday March 27th in the House Education Committee.

The American Heart Association supports this legislation because students who have more nutritious diets tend to perform better and pay more attention in school. We saw the difference universal school meals made when it was temporarily in place during the pandemic. With that benefit gone schools are once again seeing students struggle and finding themselves dealing with paperwork instead of using that time to focus on students. It is estimated that one in seven Montana children lives in a household experiencing food insecurity, and at least one quarter of food insecure children don’t qualify for reduced price lunches. While it will not be easy we believe that free school meals for all is a necessary step toward ending hunger in Montana and ensuring that all our children can thrive.

The Education Committee has not yet voted on the bill but we hope to have good news to share with you soon.
