On Monday, October 1st the Newport City Council debated a proposed smoke-free ordinance. The ordinance would prohibit smoking and vaping in all public buildings and businesses, including bars. Around 30 Newport citizens came to the meeting to speak in favor of the bill, and no one spoke in opposition. The City Council debated the bill at length, and voiced some concern about some of the wording in the proposed ordinance, specifically in relation to smoking on patios and outdoor spaces. The City Council plans to address the language issue, and take the issue back up in a few months.
