New Mexico lawmakers returned to the Roundhouse on January 19th to start the 2021 legislative session. It will no doubt be unique in light of the ongoing pandemic and the need to balance safety with meaningful advocacy from the public. The Roundhouse will be closed to the public this session because of health concerns, but there is no need to worry - we're already hard at work creating innovative opportunities for you to stay involved and make an impact.

Here's a sneak peek of what we will be working on during the 2021 legislative session:
❤️️ Local control or Preemption - Repeal existing tobacco preemption in the New Mexico Tobacco Products Act that restricts local communities from adopting laws to regulate tobacco products in the most effective ways for their own communities.
❤️ Tobacco Tax - Increase the current $2.00 per pack cigarette tax to $4.00, as well as raise taxes on other tobacco products and e-cigarettes. These increases will not only help motivate current tobacco users to quit, it will help prevent youth from starting. In addition it will raise funds to help prevent cuts to important programs and services.
️❤️ Smoke-Free Air – Remove the casino exemption from the Dee Johnson Clean Indoor Act. This affects five state-licensed casinos where hundreds of people are currently employed and not protected against secondhand smoke. Also, ensure legalized marijuana laws abide by the clean indoor act, preventing additional exposure to secondhand smoke.
As you can see we will have our hands full but together, we will work to create a healthier New Mexico for all. Learn more about our legislative priorities, virtual opportunities to advocate from the comfort of your home and more HERE.
