New Year, New Faces, New Leadership

It's a new year and the November election has brought many changes to the Ohio Legislature.

With redistricting, the numbers have changed.  Our system is being updated for upcoming alerts, but you may see a new number for where you live.

New Faces

Every two years, we see changes in the membership as people leave the legislature and new people come in.  Often times, they will move from chamber to chamber.

  • The Ohio House has 14 new members, in addition to three returning former legislators.
  • Seven new House members previously held positions in local government.
  • The number of women in this General Assembly increased from 28 to 31.  In addition, the number of African Americans will remain the same with 17

New Leadership

The leadership in the House will stay much the same.  Leaders include:  Speaker Batchelder, Speaker Pro Tempore Matt Huffman, Majority Floor Leader Barbara Sears, Assistant Majority Floor Leader John Adams, Majority Whip Cheryl Grossman and Assistant Majority Whip Jim Buchy.

House Minority Leadership includes: Minority Leader Armond Budish, Assistant Minority Leader Matt Szollosi, Minority Whip Tracy Heard and Assistant Minority Whip Debbie Phillips,

However, with the retirement of Senate President Niehaus, the Senate has a new face in the president's seat.  Senator Keith Faber was elected to the post recently.  Joining him in the minority leadership is President Pro Tempore Chris Widener, Majority Floor Leader Tom Patton and Majority Whip Larry Obhof.

On the minority side, leadership includes: Minority Leader Eric Kearney, Assistant Minority Leader Joe Schiavoni, Minority Whip Nina Turner and Assistant Minority Whip Edna Brown.

As we prepare for a busy spring legislative season, please update your key contact status if you know any member of the Ohio Legislature or our Congressional delegation.  Members come from our communities.  They may be a neighbor or member of our church or our insurance agent  or a teacher.
