Tobacco Endgame

The Issue

The American Heart Association believes the TOBACCO ENDGAME of eliminating tobacco use and nicotine addiction in the U.S. is within sight. Bold action is required to reach that goal, starting with minimizing the use of all combustible tobacco products, while ensuring that electronic cigarettes and other products do not addict a new generation of youth and adolescents. Although e-cigarettes and other non-combustible tobacco products may help some smokers quit or move to a less harmful product, a comprehensive review of the science shows that the long-term health effects of these products, the net public health impact of their use and their effectiveness as cessation tools remain unclear.

The Association Advocates

Reaching the tobacco endgame requires strong government oversight of tobacco product manufacturing and marketing, implementing proven tobacco-control policies at all levels of government, educating healthcare providers to have meaningful conversations with patients about tobacco use, and global coordination of regulatory efforts around tobacco control and prevention. Take the Tobacco Endgame pledge today!
