The American Heart Association’s Most Powerful Voices Gospel Concert will provide you the information necessary to be Empowered to Serve! The Advocacy team will be collecting Healthy Local Food Incentives Fund petitions at the Gospel Concert. You can participate from home by signing a petition today!
The Healthy Local Food Incentives Fund bill went into effect January 2017. The law provides double-value coupon incentives to SNAP participants to access fresh fruits and vegetables at farmers markets and other direct-to-consumer venues. Despite this legislative success, and unanimous support from the Illinois General Assembly, no appropriation was made for the fund in the FY 2018 state budget and the program is set to expire in June 2019. HB 4568/SB 2588 will strike the end-date of the Fund so that there is enough time to appropriate the funds and implement the program across the state.
The Fund supports “Double Value Coupon Programs,” creating affordable access to healthy food at farmers markets and other direct producer-to-consumer venues for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients. Access to affordable healthy food can help prevent and manage heart disease, diabetes, obesity and some cancers. Illinois is also home to over 165 farmers markets and farm stands that accept SNAP benefits and the double-value coupon programs benefit local farmers across the state.
Please support this bill to protect the Fund and allow time for full implementation of the program across the state!
