I’m Melissa Smith, and I’m 23 years old. I study biology pre-medical professions and a minor in public health at William Paterson University. In the future, I want to be a cardiovascular physician associate. My heart story started with my dad. My dad had problems with cardiovascular disease and was in pain daily. He would always tell me how painful it was and how he would always love me.

On May 15, 2021, I lost my father because he had a heart attack. I lost a soldier and my best friend. My father was gone so soon because he was not taking care of himself and not listening to the doctor. When I heard these stories, I knew he was tired of being sick and stressed in this world. I knew then those things wouldn’t be the same.

From the hurt and overwhelming pain, I felt about losing my father from heart disease, I decided to join American Heart Association to give back and spread awareness for my community. I dreamed about being a physician associate since I was 17 years old, but I never knew what kind of PA I wanted to be until my father. He inspired me. I hope my future adds to me inspiring others that health is essential and not to give up. Lastly, I cried while writing this, so now you know this is my HEART story. Be safe, guys!
