Meet Our New Chairman & President

The following is a message from Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association, on the recent transition of the association's national volunteer leadership, which occurs every two years in July...

I would like to thank Ron Haddock and Donna Arnett, Ph.D., FAHA, for their outstanding leadership in 2012-13 as chairman and president of the American Heart Association. The past year brought many milestone accomplishments for the association, and none would have been possible without Ron and Donna, both of whom received the AHA's Distinguished National Leadership Award on June 25 in Dallas.

Here are just a few 2012-13 highlights: the launch of initiatives including Together To End Stroke, the F.A.S.T. stroke awareness campaign with the Ad Council, Get With The Guidelines-AFIB, Voices for Healthy Kids (with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation), the AHA Corporate Forum and the CEO Roundtable; continued progress for advocacy priorities such as CPR in Schools, pulse oximetry screening and the HEART for Women Act; the 10th annual National Wear Red Day; the presentation of our first-ever Gold Standard Board Awards; being named the top health nonprofit brand by the 2013 Harris Poll EquiTrend; the growth of our scientific membership to more than 30,000 members; a record number of Late-Breaking Clinical Trials presented at Scientific Sessions 2012; and celebrating our 13th funded researcher to receive the Nobel Prize, Dr. Robert Lefkowitz of Duke University.

I want to express gratitude to Ron and Donna for all they did on our behalf, and for the selfless commitment they brought to their roles. Both are highly regarded leaders in their fields, with enormous demands on their time, so the fact that they have devoted so much of themselves to the AHA mission is incredibly humbling. Beyond the work they do for us, they engage many others in our initiatives, and instill passion for our lifesaving mission wherever they go. I can't thank them enough for all they've done.

I also would like to take the opportunity to introduce you to our 2013-14 Chairman Bernie Dennis and 2013-14 President Mariell Jessup, M.D., FAHA. Bernie is owner of Dennis Associates, LLC, a management consulting firm in Sudbury, Massachusetts, which he founded after retiring in 2004 as a vice president at Oracle Corporation. Mariell is medical director of the Penn Heart and Vascular Center, professor of medicine and associate chief-clinical affairs at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, in Philadelphia.
