A recent public opinion survey of NH voters found 90% were very concerned about the amount of sugary drinks children consume. The health risks to children were found to be very alarming. People who consume one or more sugary drinks per day have a 26% higher chance of developing adult onset diabetes. While its recommended, children over the age of two have no more than one 8-ounce sugary drink per week, children are actually consuming as much as ten times that amount. We need to create environments for children where healthier beverages are more easily accessible than drinks with a lot of added sugar. The AHA advocates for policies such as eliminating sugary drinks as the default beverage in restaurant kids meals. Together, You’re The Cure advocates can continue to press lawmakers to pass policies like this, which make the healthy choice, the easy choice.
