Support a Sugary Drink Tax because A Few Cents Makes Sense
We are working to reduce consumption of sugar by raising a significant increase in excise taxes on sugary drinks. Too many kids and families in the Commonwealth are suffering from preventable chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer and tooth decay.
Sugary drinks are the single leading source of added sugars in the American diet. A sugary drink tax can improve the financial health of our State and the physical health of our children. The revenue from a sugary drink tiered excise tax would raise at least $280-$320 million and can be used to provide access to critical care, prevention and wellness, healthy food and clean safe drinking water in our communities helping children and families most in need. In addition, if a tax on sugary drinks is large enough (causing a 10% increase in the price of sugary drinks), research shows people are less likely to purchase them.
