Little Hats for Perfect Heads

Once again, Maine knitters exceed expectations and they come from the most unlikely places.

I love the ramp-up to February (a.k.a. Heart Month). One of my favorite things is the fact that our office is full of little red hats. We collect (and launder) these hats to give to newborns born at a growing number of Maine's hospitals during February in order to empower moms to live heart healthy lives and to help their children do the same.

If I am in the office, and not at the state house, I enjoy opening the packages shipped from around the state or greeting volunteers dropping of 5, 10 or even 50 hats. Everyone oohs and ahhs over the piles of hand-knit red. My favorite box this year, by far, was the one we received from inmates at the Somerset County Jail.

Red is the color of love, it is the color of hearts and for one month it adorns the heads of Maine's tiniest residents.
