Letter to the Editor: Restore NC’s Tobacco Prevention Funds

Earlier this week You’re the Cure advocate Marie Welch wrote a letter to the editor of her local paper, The Daily Reflector.  Marie expresses her concern about the lack of tobacco funding allocated in the NC House and Senate budgets.  Marie writes:

“It is with great sadness that I realize the legislators of North Carolina did not include funding for tobacco prevention programs in this year’s budget…..I ask our legislators to reconsider. Do not risk reversing North Carolina’s historically low youth smoking rates. Reinstate funding for the programs that work. In doing so, prevention is the key and in the end, monies will be saved in health care costs in the future.”

We know that many of you also express Marie’s concerns about the tobacco funding in the budget, as do we!  We know that the QuitlineNC program is effective, and would like to see it receive the additional $400,000 that the Senate’s budget allows. Especially since every year, sixty percent of North Carolina smokers make a serious, but failed, attempt to quit.

Take a moment and write to your lawmaker urging them to include the Senate’s proposal of $1.4 million for QuitlineNC in the final budget agreement.
