Legislative Breakfast Briefing Brings Prevention Message to Lawmakers

On Wednesday February 6th, the American Heart Association in partnership with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association and Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence hosted a Legislative Breakfast Briefing for all state elected officials.  Chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, cancers and diseases of the lungs, touch the lives and health of almost every North Carolinian.  As health organizations we came together to offer a program titled “Prevention as a Partnership” to educate lawmakers on the burden of chronic disease in the state. The discussion focused on the mission of our organizations and how we are working to prevent the incidence of chronic disease, touching on key initiatives that reduce the incidence of controllable risk factors.  The program was aimed at educating legislators, especially members of the 2013 Freshman class, on critical health issues and the role they play in the quality of life and the economic vitality of the state.

The program featured the following presenters:

  • Wayne Rosamond, President-elect American Heart Association Mid-Atlantic Affiliate
  • Sammy Tchwenko, MD , MPH, Epidemiologist, Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Branch, NC DHHS
  • Ross  J. Simpson, Jr. MD, PhD, The Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence
  • David Eddleman, MD, FACS, American Cancer Society Action Network
  • Betsy Gaskins-McClaine, American Heart/American Stroke Association
  • Jill Ann (Musika) Ohar, MD, American Lung Association
  • David Rice, American Diabetes Association
  • Aldona Wos, MD, Secretary of NC DHHS

More than 100 people attended including several reporters.  You can check out some of the comments of the speakers at this link:  http://youtu.be/uFdv24saLyo.
