About the Policy Academy
While policy determines how resources are allocated and what rules guide the way that we live, advocates speak up to ensure that the needs and rights of their communities are recognized in that process. Advocates can create change from the street they live on to the country they live in. That’s why we’re proud to introduce the Leaders with Heart: Policy Academy hosted by the American Heart Association You're the Cure Advocacy Team.
This academy seeks to train advocates in order to raise up the communities they live in. Our goal is to maximize leaders and help them better understand policy and how it affects Austin residents. During the course of the academy, these leaders develop tangible policy recommendations and launch a community initiative right here in Austin.
What the Cohort Learns
- How to advocate for policy changes and pass laws
- Gain an in-depth understanding of equity issues in Austin, and ways to influence them
- Meet with community leaders, city government officials, and policy experts
- Launch a community initiative
The American Heart Association You're the Cure Team
Recently, the You're the Cure Advocacy Team worked on policy surrounding issues like Access to Care, Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, Obesity, and more. In the last year, they have passed over 30 smoke-free ordinances in cities across Texas, increased funding for obesity prevention in Austin, and advocated for the passage of bond measures that will increase biking and walking funding throughout Travis County.
