I love nothing more than my family. As a father, husband, coach, etc. I am constantly on the move. I need to find every way I can to spend quality time with my family. Every morning of the week my wife and I walk our kids to school. We live in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Las Vegas and cherish this time to chat with the kids, play tag and sometimes just get the joints and bones moving. The kids have not always appreciated the walks, but we have walked to school for so long they don’t really know any different. As parents we are confident that this short walk is a great way to engage the body and brain for optimal learning, better behavior and overall better connection.

Until this past year, I had never realized how important it was to have an environment that supports my family being active. I did not realize this because we live in a well-designed neighborhood that has many of the key elements of complete streets. But many other neighborhoods during our population explosion have not been designed this way. That does not need to be the case going forward. As we continue to grow throughout S. Nevada we can take into consideration all users and that is why we need each City to adopt a comprehensive complete streets policy.
What is a complete street?
Complete Streets are streets for everyone. They are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. Complete Streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. They allow buses to run on time and make it safe for people to walk to and from where they need to go. Here is a link to a more detailed explanation.
Why does it matter to me? To you?
Complete Streets make those morning walks to school and Saturday bike rides with the kids possible. Complete streets make it safer for those without cars to walk to work or hop on a connecting bus line. Complete streets make it safer for you and your loved ones, me and mine and everyone else.
Please help us create livable communities and improve equity, safety, and public health, while reducing transportation costs and traffic woes. To learn more and join me, please join the Southern Nevada Complete Streets Coalition via Facebook.
