Join us in celebrating a historic win for the health of all of Baton Rouge’s workforce. The East Baton Rouge Metro Parish Council took a stand earlier this month to protect all workers, including bar employees and musicians, from the harmful consequences of second-hand smoke.
Smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Smoking doubles the risk of heart disease and stroke for those who smoke and those exposed to second-hand smoke. Over 10,000 people die a year from heart disease and stroke.
The American Heart Association applauds the Council for putting health first and making Baton Rouge safer for all to live, work and play. While we are disappointed that our council is not swiftly enacting this ordinance to protect health, we are excited for the future of our city.
With the passage of a comprehensive smoke-free policy, Baton Rouge is echoing the importance of protecting employees who go to work to earn a paycheck to support their families. Baton Rouge joins the ranks with several other Louisiana communities, including New Orleans and Lafayette, to put policy in place so employees don’t have to choose between a paycheck and their health.
Thank you to the East Baton Rouge Metro Parish Council for their heroic efforts! We look forward to implementation of the smoke free ordinance and clean air in the workplace for all of Baton Rouge.
Also, thank you to the You're the Cure advocates who tirelessly called, emailed and met with council members to make a healthier Baton Rouge possible. You truly are the cure!
