Each year, Congress goes on recess during the month of August. Members of the U.S. Senate & House of Representatives traditionally spend August meeting with constituents and holding or attending events in their home states & districts.
It’s important for our elected officials to hear from us- their constituents- and August recess is a great opportunity for that to happen.
After the August recess, Congress still has critical work that needs to be finished when they return to Washington, D.C. Some important pieces of legislation are awaiting Congressional action, including the HEARTS Act in the House of Representatives and the Access to AEDs Act in the Senate. These bills are focused on improving cardiac arrest survival rates in elementary and secondary schools.
Each year in the United States, as many as 23,000 young people under the age of 18 suffer a cardiac arrest. When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, every minute counts. If someone nearby begins CPR and can use an automated external defibrillator (AED) until emergency personnel arrives, it increases the chances of survival tremendously. Both the Access to AEDs act and the HEARTS Act would help ensure students and staff at schools are prepared to respond to a cardiac emergency.
These bills have bipartisan support, and Congress needs to pass both the Access to AEDs Act and the HEARTS Act after the August recess. Let your elected officials know you need them to take action.
