John Potvin, Rhode Island

The American Heart Association recently presented John Potvin, EMT-C, with the Heart of the Mission Award for Advocacy in recognition of his leadership and tireless efforts on the "CPR in Schools Law," which requires all RI high school students to receive hands-on CPR training and an overview of AED use prior to graduation as part of the health education curriculum. From attending Lobby Day to dropping everything to testify before the House and Senate, John’s commitment never wavered. Even after the bill was signed into law, John worked with the AHA and the RI Department of Education to draft a guidance document for schools to assist with implementation. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg – in addition to serving on the RI Advocacy Committee, John is a member of the RI Board of Directors, he chairs the EMS Work Group at the Department of Health, and he’s involved with the HeartSafe Communities Program, the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Steering Committee, and the Northeast Cerebrovascular Consortium. The list could go on and on! Thank you John, for all that you do – and congratulations on this very well-deserved award!
