Thanks to the hard work of our advocates, we had many successes. First, we successfully overrode a tobacco tax veto, raising the tobacco tax in Maryland. Raising the tobacco tax is proven to prevent youth from starting tobacco and reduce smoking rates for existing smokers.
We’re also excited to say that we have passed telehealth in Maryland! This means Marylanders across the state will be able to have access to telehealth through phone or video. Telehealth is a great component to health care. With telehealth if someone can’t see their doctor in person due to location issues, mobility issues, or conditions that make traveling to the doctor difficult, patients can meet with their health care provider to check in on a host of issues that a quick consultation can handle virtually. Our advocates played a key role in this effort!
We’re also excited to announce that we saw a great increase in funding for Head Start/Early Head Start programs. When early childhood education is well funded, the children who attend these programs are healthier throughout their lives. Early education provides a critical foundation to youth who are healthier and better prepared as a result.
Thank you all so much for the great work you did this year to help advocate for issues important to Maryland. You help ensure that Marylanders live longer, healthier lives.
