It's Summertime - Break a Sweat for Good Health!

We’ve known for some time that physical activity can help maintain a healthy weight and strengthen our cardiovascular system, but now there’s proof it can reduce our risk of stroke.

New research published in the American Heart Association journal Stroke shows that people who exercised at moderate to vigorous intensity (enough to break a sweat) at least four times a week were less likely to have a stroke. The study supports prior research establishing physical inactivity as a leading risk factor for stroke, behind high blood pressure.

So what can we do?

Start walking! Walking is easy and safe. It costs nothing to get started and it has the lowest dropout rate of any type of exercise. Take the dog for a walk. Take that conference call on your cell phone while you walk around the parking lot. Park farther from the store or mall entrance – you can even add an extra lap around the mall. Here are a few other ways to fit more physical activity into your day at work and at home.

Remember these important tips for staying safe while exercising during the hot summer months:
          - Hydrate!
          - Wear sunscreen or protective clothing.
          - Avoid activity during mid-day when the sun is at its strongest.
          - Try indoor activities like yoga or racquetball.

The evidence is mounting: it pays to get moving. This summer let’s get active, break a sweat, and get healthy!
